The UP govt is taking a multi-pronged approach to curb the alarming rate of road accidents and fatalities in the state, officials said. This follows a series of questions raised in the assembly regarding road safety initiatives by the transport department.
Officials said that largescale awareness campaigns are being conducted across the state, including seminars, street plays, bikeathons and competitions for students. Public address systems at toll plazas remind drivers of traffic rules and safety measures. Leaflets and brochures are being distributed to educate the public about responsible driving practices, they said.
Mentioning that strict enforcement action is being taken against traffic violations like over speeding, drunk driving, wrong side driving and mobile phone use while driving, officials said that surprise checks for helmets and seat belts are conducted regularly.
The government is also considering offering free bus travel to women above 60 years old, officials said.
